Free Market Economic Leaders Release New Scorecard on Foreign Freeloading on American Drugs
Most Favored Patient project’s scorecard releases ahead of midterms, highlighting a winning issue for Republican leaders.
Washington, D.C. — October 22, 2026 — As part of its fall series highlighting health care solutions that Republican leaders should focus on as midterms approach, the Most Favored Patient (MFP) initiative released a new scorecard tracking how foreign countries are responding to President Trump’s call to end foreign freeloading.
The U.S. is the global leader of biomedical innovation, but other nations are not paying their fair share for America’s groundbreaking research and development (R&D). Instead, many wealthy countries enact government-set drug price controls, disincentivizing innovation while getting a free ride at the expense of Americans.
President Trump has urged these countries to end the freeloading and start investing. While the U.K. answered the call, other nations, including France, Germany, and Japan, are doubling down on socialist-style price controls.
“Foreign freeloading means fewer new treatments and cures are developed, and the ones we do get cost more than they should for American patients,” said Phil Kerpen, MFP co-chair and co-founder of Unleash Prosperity Now. “President Trump is working to hold these nations accountable, and he should continue pushing hard in trade negotiations to stop the free-riding on U.S. pharmaceutical innovation.”
This scorecard is part of MFP’s ongoing efforts to bring accountability to the health care system and lower costs for American patients without sacrificing innovation.
The MFP initiative, a project of Unleash Prosperity Now, is led by free market leaders Stephen Moore, Steve Forbes, Tomas Phillipson, and Phil Kerpen. The effort seeks to expand and build upon many of the reforms being advanced by President Donald Trump and other leaders in Congress.
